This series of articles describes the features of typical tactical manoevres explaining how they work

  1. Basic tactical devices
    • the Fork: when a piece simultaneously attacks two or more pieces
    • the Pin: when a piece stands between a more valuable piece and an attacker
    • the [Skewer]?: similar to a pin, but a valuable piece is forced to move leaving a lesser piece unprotected
    • the [XRay]?
  2. Tactics to Remove a Defender
  3. DoubleAttack tactics
  4. Tempo tactics and IntermediateMoves
  5. Opening and Closing Lines

These tactics involve increasing the scope of your own pieces or decreasing the scope of your opponent. Very often, these tactics involve a sacrifice of material in return for taking over the initiative, or winning outright. As such, these tactics can often be used to gain long-term pressure rather than an immediate advantgae - defending is always more unpleasant and taxing than attacking.

  6. Blocking and Clearing Squares
    • SquareBlocking?
    • SquareClearance?
  7. Other Tactics
