Hugh Alexander, distinguished master and writer on chess, here provides an entertaining opportunity for chess players of all strngths to test and improve their skill. The first part gives a systematic introduction, with many examples, to combative play. Part two has 70 positions for solution, arranged by type in sets of ten. The third part consists of the Test Papers and has a unique feature in that the reader can compare his results with those of some of the best players in the country.

Even though this book is out-of-print, do anything you can to find a copy and add it to your collection. This book combines the variations behind the openings (such as Modern Chess Openings), the ideas behind the openings (such as "The ideas behind the Chess Openings" by Ruebin Fine), and complete sample master level classic games to illustrate each opening (such as "500 Master Games" by Tartakower. I only wish that someone would undertake a modern revision of this book. It would be a major project, but I would think that it would sell likes hotcakes. There is simply no better book for initially learning a new opening. Caution: after digesting the material in this book, one would need to find a more modern treatise with some of the newer lines to be "tournament ready".

How does a master or grandmaster think? And how canthe amateur ass, ilate that thinking into his own game? Sets out to answer those questions with 25 games played between masters and grandmasters between 1970 and 1975. No limited monograph, it deals with openings, middlegames and end-games, explaining the fundamental principles of the game but also illustrating modern techniques developed during the past 25 years. The annotation of the moves is particularly striking: the emphasis is on revealing the reason for each significant move rather than on giving numerous tactical variations.
