- There is a huge amount of chess games available on the Internet and a Chess Database allows you to view these games, play through them and eventually analyse your own games. Some database tools are designed to be used as training tools to practice tactics, for example. Others are more general purpose.
- Utilities
- Often you want to publish your games on the Internet or perhaps print them out with example board positions, or maybe you want to write chess articles. There are a number of tools which can help you do all of these things.

Before randomly buying a book because it looks nice, best to ask an experienced player for a recommendation especially if you are interested in reading about a particular technique.
