welcome
There are a huge anumber of books, computer aids and equipment for the keen amateur
Catalogues are sometimes available for free at the club, or you can look through the catalogues in the club's resource library where there is lots of other useful information.
Chess Computer Software is available for all modern computers. Programs are available both commercially and for free. Programs can be classified into 3 broad categories:
- Chess Engines
- These are sophisticated chess programs that will play a game of chess with you. Most chess engines, even the free ones, are exceptionally strong usually rated at over 2600. Because of this, they are most often used as a tool to help you develop your game rather than as an alternative to a human player.
- Chess Databases
- There is a huge amount of chess games available on the Internet and a Chess Database allows you to view these games, play through them and eventually analyse your own games. Some database tools are designed to be used as training tools to practice tactics, for example. Others are more general purpose.
- Utilities
- Often you want to publish your games on the Internet or perhaps print them out with example board positions, or maybe you want to write chess articles. There are a number of tools which can help you do all of these things.
