Player of the Year 2004

On Thursday evening, reigning Ulster Champion, Steve Scannell, presented Bangor's "Player of the Year" award to David Grzymek. The award is offered annually by the club in recognition of a players personal contribution and performance during the past season.

In his introduction, Steve voiced his pleasure in presenting the award to a young person who demonstrates a resurgence in junior chess, long in the doldrums. Steve insisted that new players entering the sport are vital for a healthy and vibrant chess community so well represented by Sam Lynne after whom the trophy is named.

Steve first played David in a simultaneous tournement hosted by Bangor last season. David's performance then not only augered a difficult night for Steve but promised more for the future and David has not disappointed! Steve congratulated David on his personal achievements during the past 12 months and concluded by praising David's positive attitude on and off the board - well deserving nomination as the club's most valued "Player of the Year" for 2004.

During the 2003-4 season, David has:
  • scored 13 wins in his first senior league season rising quickly from board 4 to open for his team on board 1
  • represented Ulster in Inter-Provinical tournaments
  • represented Ireland in International tournaments
  • most recently claimed an Irish Junior title in Galway
Steve's comments were appreciated by club members who enthusiastically applauded David as he accepted his award.
