New Chess Season Begins

The new season began on 15 September 2005 at Groomsport Parish Church Hall. The Club has planned a number of events for the 2005/6 season, the first being the 24^th Bangor Chess Congress on Saturday, 24 September.

24th Annual Chess Congress

This event will be held in Groomsport Parish Hall and will take the form of a 6 round Swiss Tournament with 30 minutes on each clock. There will be two competitions, a Senior for players graded 1500 or more, and a Junior one for all other players. The actual allocation of places in each competition will depend upon the total number of entrants.

The Eddie Webb Cup will be presented to the winner of the Senior competition and the Junior Congress Cup will be awarded to the successful player in the Junior event. Cash prizes will be paid to winners and runners-up along with special Grading prizes to encourage younger competitors.

Intending competitors may enter by telephone or by email via the following:

Phone:
Drew Ferguson at (028) 9145 7248
Richard Proctor at (028) 9145 1069
Email drew@bangorchessclub.org.uk

Entry fees are £7 for the Senior Competition and £5 for the Junior. Competitors are asked to book in advance and to pay at the door on the day Registration of players will start at 9.15AM. Light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

This is the first event in the Ulster chess season and it has been very popular in previous years. All competitors are welcome regardless of strength.

Belfast & District Chess League

The Bangor Club will field four teams in the three divisions of the league this season. Two Bangor teams will compete in the B division with one each in the A and C divisions. This means that all members should have the opportunity of playing in matches during the season.

The first fixtures will take place at the end of October and matches will continue throughout the season until the end of April 2006.

Annual General Meeting 2005

The AGM will be held at 8.30PM on Thursday, 13 November 2005 and all existing members, or those interested in joining the Club, are invited to attend.

Club Night

Bangor Chess Club meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30PM throughout the season. Apart from the more formal events like the League matches and the Annual Congress, the Club tries to encourage younger members to develop their skills by coaching and by demonstrations.

There are no age limits and the Club membership includes a wide range of both abilities and ages. New members are especially welcome at the start of the season.
