Bangor League Challenge

With only 4 or 5 matches left to the end of the League season, all Bangor teams had established themselves as strong contenders for League Honours. Thursday Club Night was a full house with all 3 teams entertaining visitors.
Carnegie - Division 1
After a poor start to the season, Carnegie had rallied well and gradually lifted themselves from the tail-end of Division 1 to become a serious threat to Fisherwick holding a strong second place. After dominating for most of the season, Clifton House were faltering and their apparently unassailable position in top place had been whittled away - Fisherwick, and now Carnegie, were rapidly approaching.

On Thursday, Carnegie entertained Civil Service in a rescheduled fixture. Civil Service were holding a strong position in the middle of the League regularly fielding a consistent team competing well on all boards.
  1. 1-0 Steve Scannell vs John Nicholson
  2. 0-1 David Grzymek vs Peter May
  3. 1-0 Mark Newman vs Gerald Harvey
  4. 1-0 Alan McConnell vs Chris Kelly
  5. 1-0 Damien Lavery vs Chris Armstrong
An excellent win for Carnegie netting them 6 points. Their line-up with David on board 2 seems to be working well though tonight he met an on form Peter May. Next week Carnegie meet their biggest test when Clifton House travel to Groomsport.

Division 2

Despite one or two hiccoughs, the Barracudas have dominated Division 2 holding a strong top-position at the Christmas break. In the second-half of the season, RVH Hawks started a determined assault on the League fielding an awesome team in their bid to return to Division 1. In the last 2 weeks, the Bangor teams saw their hopes of League victory disappear with 2 resounding defeats by the Hawks.

With the Hawks now in a dominate position at the top of the League, the rest of the Division were locked in a battle for the runner-up slot. Barracudas held position but Groomsport have 2 games in hand and Bombardier & Hillsborough remain threats.

Barracudas vs RVH Ravens
Barracudas needed a strong showing against the Ravens. Not just to maintain their league position but to avenge their ignominious 4-1 defeat at RVH.
  1. 0-1 James O'Fee vs Stephen McCann
  2. 1-0 Philip Todd vs Gerry Collins
  3. 1-0 Richard Montgomery vs Michael Kane
  4. 1-0 David Symmington vs Phillip Morrison
  5. 1-0 Ken Browne vs Pearse O'Brien
Missing stalwart Martin Rogers, Barracudas delivered a convincing 4-1 win with Philip claiming a good win and Richard continuing his winning streak this time on board 3. Next week Barracudas travel to Hillsborough looking for an important win to keep Hillsborough in check and strengthen their own position.
Groomsport vs Randalstown
Despite their rated strength, Groomsport have taken a back-seat to the Barracudas in the League but as the season draws to close, Groomsport have begun claiming very strong wins and have gradually manoevered themselves as the dark-horse of the league; their 2 games in-hand disguising a strong challenge. But they needed to maintain exceptional performances to pass the Barracudas.
  1. =-= Martin Moorcroft vs Richard Gould
  2. =-= William McGratten vs Stephen Downes
  3. 1-0 Richard proctor vs Peter Wilson
  4. 1-0 Paul McLoughlin vs Steven Eachus
  5. 1-0 Ron Henderson vs Chris Dardis
Richard Gould nearly proved to be Martin's Nemesis again; claiming the 2 draws on top boards gives Groomsport a 4-1 win and keeps them well in the hunt. Next week, the pressure is still on for a big score when Groomsport travel to bottom-of-the-league Portadown.
